Ok ok. I should be really upfront and say that this book is written by my the founder of my company’s daughter (Hey Jim!). That might be the reason I picked up this book, but that doesn’t change my review of it at all. I did actually find this book super enjoyable.
In this book, Stephanie McNeal takes us quickly through three influencers (honestly none I had heard of) in three different spaces on IG- Mormon mommies, southern fashion, and BIPOC + plus size athletes. She takes us through the ups and downs of the industries and show us just how much money these people actually make (p.s. it’s like 4x the amount you think it is if not more).
While this book if full of facts and insights, I’m not sure if it’s anything you don’t already know. Stephanie talks about the blow up of influencing on social vs. just blogging, the difficulties of doing this as a job (taking pictures is a much bigger affair than it looks), and the controversy of children on the internet and racial injustices online. There was also a big push on the fact that influencers are working While McNeal goes over several topics and it’s definitely interesting, I wouldn’t call this a deep dive. The influencers she spoke to still didn’t show us behind the curtain anymore than what these people share publicly on their own pages. Basically, I wish there was a bit more tea spilled.
